Mauritius has about 273 are endemic plant species.

Many of these are endangered and some 55 species are known with less than 10 individuals in the wild.

Mauritius may have already lost as many as 61 of their plant species and about 98 are classified vulnerable.

The Dodo bird which inhabited the island, became extinct in less than 80 years due to deforestation, hunting and nest destruction.

Of the 45 bird species originally found on Mauritius, only 21 have managed to survive.

With the forested land becoming more scarce, this unique biodiversity is severely and increasingly threatened.
